About the Show

Godspell is musical interpretation of the Gospel according to Matthew, and follows the life of Jesus and his followers during his ministry. Much of Godspell is expressed through parables and story telling between Jesus and his disciples.

Godspell began its life as a musical written by John-Michael Tebelak as part of his masters thesis project in 1970. Most of the original lyrics came directly from the Episcopal Hymnal, and were set to music by the cast members themselves. The concept of the show proved so successful that, during its short two-week run, it was brought to the attention of producers Charles Haid, Edgar Lansbury and Joseph Beruh. Together, the three decided they wanted to open Godspell off-Broadway.

Stephen Schwartz was hired to write a new score for the show. While the lyrics still relied heavily on the Episcopal Hymnal, Schwartz exploited a number of musical styles to give the flavour it is known for today - everything from pop to vaudeville was incorporated. Opening in the Cherry Lane Theatre, Godspell was soon moved to the larger Promenade Theatre. In 1976 Godspell moved to Broadway, where it remained for over a year. Godspell was one of the longest-running off-Broadway musicals, and more than 2600 performances of Godspell were held both on and off Broadway before it closed in September 1977.
