Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical designed for a younger cast, leaped onto Rockdale Town Hall's stage in May, and everyone was invited to their magical Jellicle Ball.

CATS, one of the longest running musicals in history, delighting tens of thousands of people over the years on both Broadway and London’s West End, visited the Rockdale Town Hall, from 24th May to 1st June, thanks to The Regals Musical Society and a combined cast of over 80 young performers.
The Regals presented an Abridged Edition of CATS, which was re-imagined for a junior cast, and featured selected popular songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber, including the smash hit ‘Memory’. Performed by two talented young local casts, of which more than 50 live in the St. George and Sutherland Shire area, the show was a must see.
Thanks to the co-ordinated efforts and experience of the production team of Director, Courtney Josh, Musical Director, Julie Ryan, and Choreographer, Mia Pimentel, the audience was transported to this magical world filled with enchanting songs, fascinating characterisation and gifted dance that left audiences wanting more.
The two casts ("Kittens" 7-12 years and "Tabbies" 13-18 years) included some of the best nurtured talent the Town Hall has seen for years, and they did an outstanding job of bringing this iconic musical to life during 10 alternating shows.
The costumes alone were simply breathtaking and on par with anything you’d see outside of the community theatre world, thanks to a dedicated team of cast members and parents, headed by Kelly O'Mara who put in months of work hand-painting, sewing and knitting tailored unitards, gloves, legwarmers and tails, and practising make-up unique to each performer.

RSPCA NSW's programs that sustain life-giving connections between disadvantaged people in the community and their animals are also vital and inspiring.

SYNOPSIS
CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of the Jellicle Cats. It is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground, and is alive with purr-fect felines including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Skimbleshanks and Grizabella.

The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one special cat to ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
BACKGROUND

Based on the universally popular poetry of T. S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, CATS has become a true musical theatre phenomenon. CATS opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. CATS' London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years.

Originally directed by Trevor Nunn and featuring musical staging by Gillian Lynne, the all-singing, all-dancing Tony-winning musical spectacular has been translated into 16 languages. With universal appeal and an expandable cast of different age groups, the show has not only been presented in theatres, but also in tents in Japan and Korea, an engine shed in Switzerland and school gymnasiums across the U.S.A.
CATS Abridged Edition

The CATS Abridged Edition has been created for junior groups with a performing age of 18 and under. It is performed to a backing track, not an orchestra. The CATS Abridged Edition backing track is approximately 75 minutes in length and has been developed with younger Jellicles in mind.
