The Leader of the Pack is a jukebox musical filled with hits from the late 1950s and 60s which we all know and love. Instantly recognisable song titles such as Be My Baby, And Then He Kissed Me, Chapel of Love, River Deep, Mountain High and, of course, Leader of the Pack ensure that your feet will be tapping and your mouth will be humming along for the whole show.
The show begins in the late 1950s, where a young teenage Ellie Greenwich dreams of a life as a song writer and hearing her own songs played on the radio. However, her mother insists that she pursues an education degree where she'll have a means of supporting herself.
While attending Queens College, Ellie finds work in Manhattan's Brill Building - the epicentre of music in New York. Here, she meets Gus Sharky and a fellow aspiring songwriter Jeff Barry. After a whirlwind courtship, she and Jeff marry and soon begin producing hit after hit for bands such as the Ronettes, the Crystals and the Shangri-Las.
In 1965, at the pinnacle of their musical partnership, Jeff and Ellie come head to head. While Jeff wants to settle down and start a family, Ellie is not ready to stop working and writing - consequently Jeff divorces her. They remain professional partners for a year, but Jeff's remarriage instiagates a spiral of depression in Ellie which ultimately results in a nervous breakdown.
The show finishes by fast forwarding to the mid-1980s, introducing us once more to Ellie: now a self-confident and successful woman in control of her life.
